The brouhaha over Sarah Palin’s being chosen as the Vice Presidential running mate by John McCain has opened a Pandora’s box that has polarized the country. Touted as having the experience of being a mayor of a small town and then governor of Alaska, the Republicans are trying to claim she has more experience than Obama and Biden having governed a state. If this is to be believed, than the logical assumption would lead to her having more experience than her running mate, McCain.
McCain may have been wise to choose a woman running mate to garner the votes of those disheartened by Hillary Clinton’s loss; however, he could have chosen someone who is not a S and M (Stand up and Model) political, but one with real experience. The name Olympia Snow resonates in my mind. There are other respected Republican women politicians in the fifty states who have more experience as well as name recognition than Palin. Yet the McCain campaign made the decision to slap them in the face by choosing an unknown with two years experience from a state with less than 800,000 people.
I just finished reading an article by the actress Jamie Lee Curtis on the Huffington Report http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jamie-lee-curtis/debate-not-relate_b_123491.html. Curtis openly shares her own problem with alcohol addiction and the need for other similarly addict-fighting people for her own support system. She relates how people cheered felt they could relate to her when she exposed her problems to the public rather than let them be polished to a high glossy shine by publicists. Yet, she goes on to state that “the problem is I may be relatable and share some of your experiences and concerns but you don’t want me as president of United States.”
The dumbing down of Americans is now in the spotlight with the world watching. Cheerleaders for Palin are giving her their support because she is a working mother, an advocate of creationism being taught in schools, a lifetime member of the NRA, against gay marriages, and a “Christian”. But they are forgetting that there is much more to running a country than an under populated state. Her first passport was issued in 2007. What foreign policy experience does she have? How would she cope with a natural disaster like Katrina. Bush who was governor of Texas, ignored it until he was called to the carpet. The list of her lack of experience could fill a volume; add to this the controversy over her daughter’s pregnancy in regard to the family values morals spurting from her lips, her scandal with the State Trooper, and the pipeline to nowhere. She is an aneurysm away from being President of the United States who will have to make global decisions, not only those the fundamental right are concerned with; is she ready to represent the ‘greatest nation in the world’? I think not.
